Its up to Arsene to convince him otherwise now. I will be very disappointed if we dont get him, but if he feels he cant adapt to our League in a year, then clearly he is not the player people say he is. I actually have no doubts that he would be able to adapt due to his forceful robust nature, but if he is saying these things then clearly he has not got the right character for our club.

We want people with a bit of ambition which is something he clearly lacks going on these latest comments. Right now he is 4th choice striker for Brazil behind Ronaldo, Adriano and Robinho - none of these play in England, so actually playing in England would benefit him as it would give him a HIGHER profile as regards to his world cup chances.

I cant help but think his agent is coercing him into saying these things, especially after meeting the boss and saying he wanted to join us 3 weeks ago.

Its a real shame, but most likely there will be another twist, yet another, and this time he will come out saying he wants the Arsenal move.

Still though, he has been quoted as saying a 'spectacular offer' would make him consider the move to us, maybe Wenger will give him that offer as he clearly wants him badly.

By the way, there are no quotes coming from Real Madrid actually saying they want him, and also none from Barca. It is just pure speculation by marca.com who have very little to fill pages with on this particular story right now as Sevilla are in China.

If Real actually think Sevilla will sell them both Baptista and Ramos for 30 mill euros then they are insane. Weve offered 24 mill alone for the Beast. Sevilla will only do a deal that satisfies them financially and that is OUR offer, not any speculated offer from Real.

If Sevilla want the Beast out, they can force him out by making him their 4th choice non EU player next year. That truly would fuck up his world cup hopes wouldnt it. Its very much in the balance now isnt it, not looking too good for us, but i wont give up hope just yet. Lets have our offer accepted and give Arsene some time speaking to The Beast at least. If Arsene sees he doesnt want to join us, then Arsene will leave it well alone. WE MUST AT LEAST KEEP TRYING!

This guy is playing us for a bunch of tossers. Can you remember a quote from aaaaaages ago now, something along the lines of, "a good player should be able to play in any league, and I consider myself to be a good player"?

He's either got multiple personality disorder, or he changes his mind more than I change my underwear.

    Good god, what a twat.

I dont reckon Baptista is AW's only trasnfer target.. it cant be he wouldn't put all his eggs in one basket.. also that Robinho deal isnt a done deal - but you can be sure Real will try anything to get the monet down - even with being linked to another player.. but I think they really want Robinho & must admit i dont know the state of Brazilian football re: finances etc but dont think a club would turn down near on £20m for one player... so the story continues.. GREAT!

Was just looking on the skysports.com site and saw Baptista's news archive and every day there seems to be a change in what will happen or what is happening. One day Sevilla are worried hes going to leave, the next they say hes not leaving. One minute he says he wants to leave, the next he says he staying. It is actually beyond a joke now.

On June 28th Baptista said this, '''I would love to play for a team such as Manchester United or Arsenal".

''I have made up my mind that I want to go to England.

''It wouldn't just be a financial decision.

''The league there is the best in the world and my style of play would suit it.

''I don't feel valued at Sevilla.''

Now nearly a month on he is saying he wont be able to adapt to our League. What in god's name is going on with this saga, it is beyond belief and ive never actually known anything like it.
As a player The Beast wpuld be brilliant for us, but his personality would need some bloody work, the guys clearly a mentalist.

The artcile before that one above on skysports.com is even more interesting considering todays quotes. This is June 17th:

"Julio will not be renewing his contract with Seville," said Figer.

"We gave our terms to them but there was no agreement, now the situation for him has changed.

"If Julio is the most important player at Sevilla, as they say he is, then his wages must reflect that and they do not.

"It looks as if they don't want him any more.

"We are not negotiating a possible move to Real Madrid or Barcelona, as has been suggested.

"But we have been discussing a move abroad."

WHAT IN GODS NAME HAS CHANGED, SEIROUSLY, WHAT HAS CHANGED!?!?!

    4:25 PM
    Anonymous Anonymous said...

what has changed is that REAL and barca havenow shown an interest in the player. he was waiting for this. he can only gain by waiting till he gets his passport. he becomes an even better prospect for the spanish clubs ashe will hold a spanish passport and not take up the foreign quota.
Arsenal should drop this pursuit and move elsewhere like in ANELKAS direction.

This is ridiculous... to be honest, id rather not have him now....seems like too much fuss over a player who will probably become abit of an anti-climax....iv said it before and i'll say it again...lets rescue Owen from real...problem solved.

oh and to Anon @ 4.20.....or should i say spurs fan...

i think when it comes to Arsenal...birds come second...so why dont u find some more time in your 'pussy filled schedule' to annoy another set of supporters... absolute idiot

This is the oddest proposed transfer i have ever observed as a fan and as ive said before im really surprised that its Arsenal involved in it becuase we do not normally get involved in such laughably long negotiations.

Those articles from June are really interesting becuase he is saying the exact opposite now.

What worries me is he is saying these things today much nearer to any transfer that could happen than he said he wanted to join us. So i now think any deal is very unlikely. Its a shame, but the way hes conducted himself suggests hes not the right personality for our club. Player yes, character no.

Owen is a top player, but he is not really what we need is he. He wouldnt give us that PLAN B which is the only thing we lack in my opinion. He would be just more of the same.

Owen would be buying for the sake of it, just buying a name.

    4:38 PM
    Anonymous Anonymous said...

tommigooner, I agree, never has there been such an overdrawn deal involving us. I tend to think that that may be an important factor. We would never be involved in such a deal in the past, so why now???

    4:39 PM
    Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hah, just forget about him! We can still go on and win the Champions League next season, and make everyone that didn't join us regret. If Liverpool can win the Champions League, I don't see why Arsenal can't. Just let this dumb beast rot in Seville.

    4:44 PM
    Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tottally disagree with Gilio (sorry mate!) but with Owen, you get a natural goalscorer, he's quick and suits our 'on the ground' quick passing. We dont exactly need a plan B...look what happened in the FA cup Final...that was plan B tactics and we SCRAPED through that game!
I can see what your saying i.e playing against the tighter defences etc but with Owen, your not just buying a name, your buying a PROVEN goalscorer who's gonna be EVEN MORE up for it next season with the next championships coming up next year... he would be ideal...AND hes english! if these new rules come in about number of englishmen in a team...we certainly would need him!!!

Also good people think we might be missing a trick here, now i dont want to put pressure on the boy - but this new fella Helb is supposed to be a bit like Beckham (not the circus the player thank fck!) & can run at people as well as cross. He had top assist in the Bundesliga last season - so that will be one change in the way we play next season. And judging by the friendlies the fella can score as well.

Could all these "quotes" be paper talk? I mean, the Beast has travelled to China - Not sure whether he would be taliking all the way?

Regardless - have faith: Arsene knows...

    4:47 PM
    Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah ill accept that view Hackney. I have no doubts that Owen would be good for us, dont get me wrong he is a fine finisher. We did scrape through the Cup Final, but it was more luck than judgement. Not once did we look like scoring past United, while they looked as if they could score nay minute really.

We looked uncomfortable in the 4-5-1 becuase we do not have the right players to be able to play the formation. We would need a target man type player, someone strong who could hold up the ball, and Owen is not that really. Owen would fit into our style beautifully, but he would not fit into the plan B that i think everyone realises we now need to incorporate into our free flowing football.

Thats why i would prefer The Beast over Owen any day of the week, especially regards to our Euro chances.

This beastly saga has drawn on for way too long, but for the players point of view i can unserstand the hesitation on his part which could well be backed up by AW.

    1. AW may be waiting for Baptista to get his EU passport so that should the move to our beloved Arse not work out he can be sold on for more with an EU passport.

    2. AW has spoken to the Beast and to "Find out if the player wants to play for us". From this informal chat we DOUBLED our original bid! Read from that what you will....

    3. These reports of the Beast being linked with Real are ALL sourced from Marca who are notoriously pro Real Madrid and also claimed Michael Ballack agreed to a move to Madrid but funnily enough "did not source this claim."

    http://sport.monstersandcritics.com/soccer/article_1036447.php/Report_Real_Madrid_still_after_Germanys_Ballack

Supposedly Baptista has called a news conference for later today...

HOWEVER, i dont think we can afford to think about Plan B when we dont have the sufficient players for plan A!!!
We need a good striker and a good Centre mid to have a STRONG 1st 11 to compete with chelski's... THEN, u think about plan B !

Baptista is really a BEAST!!!! I am not praising him, i am shitting him! He himself said that premiership will be suitable for his style, and now he came up of all sorts of excuses... I hope Arsene dont sign him... I dont think he is keen on playing for Arsenal too... so lets change target Arsene...

    4:57 PM
    Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hackney i agree there, we are a way off. Ideally i would like us to sign Baptista and Owen. That would be brilliant, but it looks like one or the other, and in that case i would go Baptista due to his versatlity as Wenger has hinted as using him as both a midfielder and a striker.

I agree, we are a way off Chelsea right now. Their squad is ominous.

    4:59 PM
    Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the whole reason we are all so worked up about baptista is simply because we all know its him or nothing!! I am sick of arsenal's transfer policies. We have great youth players coming through but that on its own is not enough for a supposed big club. The whole reason we failed last season was because we failed to improve the squad, yes chelsea had a great season but you have got to expect them to have the same again this time therefore you need a stronger squad & team than we have.

Without a ball being kicked I will confidently predict we will not win the premiership or champions league unless a couple of experienced signings happen.

    anonymous @ 4:51pm....

I like your views. Very interesting, and i agree about Marca, you cant rely on an artcile with no quotes. It says theyd try to buy Baptista and Ramos for 30 mill euros. THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN.

It is telling that we not only upped out bid after Arsene met him, but we are still even trying now since he has said he doesnt want to join us (pretty much). WHY ARE WE STILL TRYING? there has to be a reason

    5:02 PM
    Anonymous Anonymous said...

The only advantage our squad have over Chelski's is that we have LESS superstars to keep happy!

Im just hoping Jose will have to do SO much tinkering with the team that they get no real balance...(maybe wishful thinking!) but it could happen....when u look at their squad they have about 18 1st team players!!! AND their still going for Essien! it might be a blessing in disguise if they get him... when u have too much money u become greedy and certain players will get unhappy at playing rotation football... thats why i think we can push chelsea this season!

    5:04 PM
    Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hang on a minute. As usual you all know nothing of what is happening and get caried away with fuckwit media speculation. Does anyone really believe Wenger would still be pursuing this deal if he hadn't spoken with Baptiste and didn't still have a clear indication of his desire or willingness to join Arsenal? Do you think he is stupid enough to continue to try to sign a player who he knows really would prefer to be playing elsewhere? I dont think so somehow. What would be the point?

    5:07 PM
    Anonymous Anonymous said...

If we avoid injuries we might have half a chance of pushing Chelsea, but at the moment i cant really see it. I understand your views on the tinkering hackney, but i think Jose is an intelligent man, a cunt none the less, but he knows what he is doing. With Essien they would have a ridiculous ammount of midfielders, but the players who would be likely to miss out week in week out are Tiago, Geremi and Jarosik. All of whom are not really needed and not very influential. He will deal with it just fine.

I am dissapointed with our dealings this year, i really expected us to sign a couple of experienced players, but we havent and Chelsea are even stronger, whereas we are arguably weaker. We just need to hope for the ebst i guess.

ok what we do know (well according to the media) he has 2 years left which means Seville will want to off load him for as much filthy lucre as possible ASAP.

Baptista changes his mind more times than Gerrard.

All the rest and even some of the above is simple speculation... Who knows, does Arsene.

But got to admit why is AW after a player, quite aggressively it seems who doesn't know his Arse from his elbow?

Thanks Gilio (I posted under anon @ 4:41)

It's funny how AW asked for trust in his abilities after the PV transfer when it SHOULD have been there since we won the Prem at Old Trafford (arguably before that) however it seems NO-ONE trusts him now!

Those of you slamming Baptista questioning his commitment do so with no evidence to backup your claims. Quotes from Marca and AS aka Real Madrid fan boys, do not count. Its possible that they are trying to screw our deal with Baptista in the same way we almost screwed up their Robinho deal.

Chelski's squad is looking ominious, but it has rightly been pointed out that they have a huge amount of superstars to keep happy which could cause them to be unbalance should they go out early in any cup competitions (I.e fewer games to play their players in)Bearing in mind as 'Great' as Chelski were last season they failed to beat us.

With Hleb and Baptista we still stand a chance!

For those who have not seen either player in action i have videos of both i would upload if someone would kindly provide some instructions.

I think the whole Baptista fiasco is now dead !! I just hope that Wenger has some alternatives up his sleeve ( unlike last year ) - We definitely need a goalkeeper as well as a striker ( Henri cannot play in every game!).Also, why not that Papa bloke from Fulham as a stop-gap for this season - he as big as Vieria and is not afraid of putting his foot in when required (he also scores goals and knows what the Premiership is all about).

Forget Baptiste now, I don't want anyone who considers us his third choice. He did look a useful player but is still largely unproven at the top level consistently. For the last 6 months I have been keen on Owen. His record speaks for itself. Great record at international level, good record at an extremely defensive Liverpool and good record at RM with limited games. This plan B everyone refers to seems to be about having a strong striker who can hold the ball up. Well how about this as a plan B. Play Henry in a free role behind Owen, rather than having Henry leading the line waiting for the ball, where he often goes missing in Europe, therefore making us look ineffective at times. Some of our best results in Europe have been when Henry comes deeper in a more free role. He will create havoc with his pace and ability and would link up the midfield and attack. And when he drives at the opposition box from wide and flicks it across the goal, instead of no-one being there you have Owen to stick it in the back of the net. I think those 2 would form a 50+ partnership, and with TH in the free role our attacks would be more varied and less predictable.

Baptista has once again said he would rather stay in Spain, but AW still rates our chances of signing him at 50-50. If Baptista keeps saying he doesnt want the move, why are we still in there trying to get him. It really is beyond me.
