Is this going to be the season where Reyes shows his abundant talent more consistently? Where do you think he will play? I'm not sure that Le Boss is convinced he can be relied upon as a striker. RVP should be first choice - providing he gets the all clear. Hopefully Reyes won't suffer from seasonal form changes again!

There are a number of players that have been bought and sold recently, some that are seemingly what we need. Presumably Wenger is aware of deals occuring between different clubs and the availability of certain players. Therefore he must have his reasons for not going for them.
Sometimes I can't fathom them (like not getting Paul Robinson for peanuts) but more often than not he his pulled out a gem of a player who i've never heard of, and polishes them into a quality player.
Until the window closes all we can do is wait and see. Wenger knows!!

Why are so many Gooners panicking? I'd love Baptista to join as much as the next guy, but if he doesn't its not the end of the world, we all know how Wenger has a tremendous eye for talent so i'm sure he has other options he's looking at. We often don't sign players until late July or August as prices are constantly falling as clubs accept lower bids knowing they have to sell so stay calm and look forward to Wenger bringing in some exceptional recruits as it will happen.
Also, about Diarra, he is miles better than Davids now, he would be a fantastic buy, and how ironic would it be if Chelsea fork out £30m on Essien, while we sign his partner at Lyon, who is the most vital part of their midfield for around £5m.
The problem with Yakubu is that he drifts out of games or groups of games. With the number of games Arsenal plays, it would have been an even bigger problem with us.
apparently Diarra has signed an extenstion with Lyon so any stories linking us to him should just be ignored, even after that Sp*rs tw@t Freddi Kanoute reckons we should go for him.

one thing about 'AW knows' - he did say on the official site he is in no hurry to replace PV4. ok he might not be but thousands of legions of Gooners are.. but we have trusted him before, its just this time we have got rid of a very very important player (ok didnt play a la Vieira-esque last season granted) however we have to beat The Bank of Chelsea to the title without him this season.. and that aint going to be easy.

Yakubu is not in the same league as Baptista. The Beast almost single handly secured Champions League Football for Sevilla. He can head the ball, run with pace and is a better finisher than Barcelona's Etto. Yakuba has the pace and the strength but misses too many easy chances with his feet and his head. Bapitista and a worldclass attacking midfielder like Ballack will ensure that the Emirates Stadium begins as the home of the Champions(Domestic or Europeam hopefully both).
If there are NO signings, then we are in for a disappointing season. We are not good enough. How the hell can Arsenal think they can compete with a squad thats weaker than last season? How the hell can Wenger not buy a goalkeeper after last years fiascos with Lemon and Almoronia? How the hell can he sell one of our most important playwers and replace him with no one!? Why the hell do we always have to do our dealings without making any comment, espcially when we are constantly being linked to players - its so frustrating! I agree that Wenger should also have made a statement about Baptista when he spoke of Guti. It is becoming frsutrating. One minute we ARE signing him, the next we ARE NOT. I think most gooners are a bit worried. Arsenal not challenging for the title is as much of a disaster for us as getting relegated would be for the teams that face the drop.

First off, Vieira is past his prime. He has done all he can with Arsenal and that includes not winning the CL. Liverpool showed last year why the CL is a second rate competition to the Prem anyway. I'd rather win the Prem than CL any year. Hleb has the ability to replace Vieira I think. Gilberto provides the defence so they can put anyone in beside him as the attacker. When Vieira's in the team they run every play through him and all the teams know it. Stop him, stop Arsenal. That's why we haven't won the CL. So change is good. With the likes of Reyes, Bentley, Cesc, Flamini and Helb all competing for midfield spots there is more than enough to replace Paddy.
As for goalkeepers, Jens flaps a bit but we also saw that when there is a good defence in front of him (that is, that useless monkey Cygan is not in) then we don't concede too much. The times we were poor last year was when we had no cover for Sol and when Gilberto was out. So if Baptista comes fine, otherwise I agree with Le Boss.

We were a long way off last yr even with the experience of PV4. How can we possibly be closer to Chelsea now without that. Being critical over the club's poor performance in the transfer market so far does not equate to a lack of support for the team when the season starts. Surely we have the right to do this when the evidence is there - Arsenal are WEAKER.
It will go on and on. Mourinhos signed a long term contract and now as well as making big name signings that they NEEDED, he is also signing youngsters like Diarra and he will probably get Obi Mikel. They are now building for the future, as well as for the present. Their current squad is ominously good.
What we are talking about is THIS season. And after last seasons debacle in the League and the CL i think we all realised that we needed some new faces. Wenger even said it, and now hes gone back on his words and it disappoints me. After years of crapness in Europe, i finally that it had dawned on AW that we needed a plan B, thats why hes trying to sign Baptista. Good on him for that. But if he misses out, he wont buy anyone. How was last year's Prem season a debacle? Even the undefeated team from 2003 would not have won the title from Chelsea last year? Any other year our points total would have won. Can't help what Chelsea did. Ok granted we sucked in the CL as usual. I still fail to see how we are so much worse than last year.
Players leaving - Edu - bit part player who never impacted anything last year because of injuries. Vieira - ok we all know what Paddy can do. Arriving - Hleb so far and obviously we will need to see how much he can replace Paddy.
But on top of that we have RvP, Reyes, Cesc, Flamini, Clichy all with a year under their belts. We have Senderos emerging as hopefully a new great fullback. We have Bentley who spent all last year getting XP at Norwich. We have Quincy ready to emerge perhaps. I expect all those players to be stronger this year than last so if Hleb is at least adequate and Gilberto is healthy all season how are we worse?

Im not doubting that we are an excellent side, but with Chelsea on the scene and the fact that they are ever improving, we need to be more than excellent. You cannot say we are stronger than we were last year, we have lost our fucking captain, our linchpin.
If Wenger fails to land Baptista, we know then that there will be no signings. That will disappoint me, but if and when that happens we will all just have to accept it and get on with things and get behind the team.

So you're saying the leading playmaker for a Bundesliga team is going to make 0 difference but having Baptista will allow us to win where Vieira did not? Makes no sense to me.
I'm not suggesting I don't want the beast signed, I just don't see him being the make or break. Improvement yes, be all and end all, no.
I think where we were short last year was in depth and lack of variety. The Beast will help bring both of those as he is another player we can call on and he would also provide us with a different mode of attack as we could adopt a more direct approach with a greater effect.
Think of all the times last year when we struggled (away to bolton losing 1-0, losing to bayern, losing at Anfield) and needed a more physical focal point to our attack. We couldnt be direct becuase we had NO ONE who could play that role well. Wenger even said it afetr the FA Cup Final. This of course would also help us in Europe, when a lot of the time we fail to crack teams with our dynamic flowing football. We could then knick cheap goals from corners like Chelsea can.
He can play in midfield when we need to be physical, and in games where the midfield can express themselves we could play cesc or hleb alongside Gilberto and move Baptista forward.
God this guy would be pivotal for us. This signing could actually be the be all and end all to our season. The difference between winning something and not.
I agree with Gilio, i think Baptista could be that crucial to us as he is almost two players rolled into one.
Even if he does sign we still lack a bit of depth and of course a top class goalkeeper, but we would be in a betetr position to challenge the Russians than we are now.
Hleb will make a difference to us no doubt, but Vieira leaving could have effectively cancelled that and we may lose more through missing him, than gain more through having Hleb.
Oh well, tomorrow could be the day the whole Baptista thing comes to an end and whetehr it be good or bad news thank god it will be over.
Baptista is not a replacement of Vieira. He is a striker. You don't pay 20m for a striker and play him as a defensive midfielder. Wenger is going to use Flamini as Vieira's replacement

We are of course going to give the team our full support once the season starts. At the moment i think a lot of Gooners, including myself, have been slightly disappointed by our transfer dealings after what promised to be a summer of progress after last season showed we did need more depth and a plan B.
So what has happened is we have signed Hleb, released Edu and sold our captain. That is not progress no matter what optimistic gunners say.
Anonymous, Baptista was once a defensive midfielder, and I think Wenger will use him as both an attacking midfielder with Gilberto his defensive counterpart, and as a striker when we need to utilise our plan B as Baptista's uncompromising physical apporach will give that.
Also, to expect Flamini to take over from PV4 is ludicrous. Flamini is more like Gilberto than PV4 and he is not the biggest either. I also tend to think hes not good enough to take PV4's role.
Anyway, i expect some news on any prospective Baptista transfer today and remain optimistic we will see him in redcurrant before too long.
