I was once picked up by the cops trying to get into a stadium in Amsterdam with a couple of joints in my pocket. They got really heated and demanded I give them the damn things "for destruction". Never saw the joints again.
All a long time ago, of course.
Enjoy the footie.

Manchester United crashed to an embarrassing defeat in the latest leg of their Asian tour as Kashima Antlers recorded a merited 2-1 victory.

Minor earthquakes in the area failed to unsettle the J-League leaders and Masashi Motoyama, in particular, who struck two beautiful left-footed goals past Tim Howard.

Ryan Giggs's early effort was all United could muster in response, despite bringing big guns Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney and Alan Smith into the fray in the second half.

With only five minutes on the clock, Phil Neville misjudged a crossfield pass and Motoyama pounced in emphatic fashion, lashing a superb volley past Howard's despairing dive.

It took only three minutes for United to reply as Louis Saha fed Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese winger's inviting cross was tucked in at the far post by Giggs.

Motoyama displayed his class again to restore Antlers' advantage as he collected a neat touch from Mitsuo Ogasawara and despatched an unerring finish into the back of the net.

Howard needed to pull off a great save from Takayuki Suzuki but United also spurned first half openings through Saha and Ronaldo.

After the break, Kleberson went close after a neat turn and Rooney had several efforts off target. Van Nistelrooy shot tamely from a Rooney tee-up and Ronaldo somehow headed wide at the far post after fine work from Kleberson.

Motoyama had two great attempts in a bid to seal his hat-trick but the most noteworthy effort came late on as Park Ji-Sung contrived to blaze over van Nistelrooy's clever back-heel. The Korean was injured soon afterwards, receiving a cut to his head, when passing up another opportunity.

It all turned ugly for United at the end; van Nistelrooy needlessly kneeing his marker in an off-the-ball incident and then becoming embroiled in a furious bust-up with Rio Ferdinand after the final whistle.

The two stars were arguing with each other, seemingly after Ferdinand accused the striker of failing to show for the ball in the closing stages.

Having watched the game tonight I have to say I am now even more concerned about this season. At the back Senderos was injured, which is not great news at this point in preceedings, but thats a small concern really.

Tonight we went with a Pires and Flaimini combo in central midfield and for me it did not work. Pires looked like a duck out of water. He was not comfortable and Flamini, in my opinion, does not yet have the ability to anchor the midfield. Yes we have Gilberto, but he will not play every game. If he is injured we will have to rely on young Flamini.
I think it is now absolutely essential that we buy a box to box physical midfielder or just someone who would impose themselves, because we are lacking. I hope now that we have played some quality opposition Arsene will know this. Pires cannot be an option in central mid - it is not his position and never will be. It puts way too much pressure on his partner.

Another thing is without our monumental skipper, we are looking a very small, and in some places weak side. Weve got small, nifty and skillful players in abundance, but what we are lacking is a bit of strength. The likes of Reyes, Bentley, Flamini, Pires, Freddie and new boy Hleb are all not the biggest and it concerns me when we have highly physical teams like Bolton to play during the season.

Keeper wise, Jens showed again he is very capable with his hands, but his kicking and his mental-ity are problems. Almoronia, well we know about him, enough said. WE NEED A KEEPER and thanklfully Wenger knows this, i hope.

Up front, well we have Thierry Henry, but the burden on him is now even more increased. WE NEED A PLAN B. Baptista WOULD have been great, but he is a cuntbag and has joined Real. I hope AW has something up his sleeve. We have been linked to Monaco's Adebayor. I know very little of him, but he is tall and can probably be a target man. Id like us to have a target man as it gives us other options and would increase our european chances no doubt.

Hleb played for half an hour, and his footballing abilities do impress me. He set up the goal for Lupoli (very fine finish) and also played a lovely ball through to skip, but he missed. But is it just me, or does he look very small and feeble. He needs to get on the weights machine and bulk up, because he will struggle against the likes of Bolton and Blackburn.

On the whole, although we won, the game was only good for fitness. I think the game does show our fatal floors. Lack of depth (Senderos injured, in comes Cygan...). Lack of midfield muscle. Lack of a plan B (if we are not right on our game, we will struggle as teams can and will stop our game). Lack of Keeper.

It is my opinion we MUST sign 3 players. A keeper, a physical midfielder and a target man. We have the money, spend it or otherwise it WILL be a disappointing season.

Gilio, you're forgetting about Gilberto and Cesc, who I think will be first choice in the center this season. True enough, though, about physical presence. We struggled against Bolton of all wanky teams. I doubt Toure will get moved back into midfield. Flamini looked a little bulkier, maybe I'm just hoping. I'm also not too optimistic about Wenger signing a physical midfielder for the sake of it. I admire Wenger for wanting to only buy players who will make the team better, whether they're a big name or not, but we are definitely lacking depth. Also agree on needs you mentioned. Who's out there now to get? Of "big name" players, Essien, Mascherano, and Davids (big question marks about the latter anyway) aren't options anymore. Proto signed with Anderlecht, ?Isaakson - Rennes reportedly won't sell this summer. Targetmen - Owen (not really the kind of targetman we need), Torres (pipedream), Crouch (no thanks, anyway), Vieri (thank god no), etc. Just not a lot to be had at this point. The one I'd go for now is Bouba Diop. But that defeats the logic of having sold Paddy. This is doing my head in, so I'll leave my trust in the man.

I think people have to understand that Arsene knows what he is doing. I read a commentary recently about the fact that Chelsea are a very strong side and Arsenal would struggle against Chelsea this season.

I think of the situation differently, Arsenal have a real chance of winning the premiership than Chelsea. Remember last season Chelsea were very very lucky to win the premiership, Arsenal were 10 points cleared. You should also remember that when Arsenal were playing badly, Vieira was also playing. My theory is this, Arsenal will win the premiership if they play the way they start the season throughout the whole season.

Remember Arsenal against Chelsea last season, Chelsea were very lucky to win. Henry miss and the clear hand ball that the referee did not see because he was 'bribed'. Arsenal have not lost too many players too, Vieira and Edu are the names that come to my mind at the moment.

Chelsea will not be too lucky this season. Liverpool and Man Utd will have their say too. The billions they spent last season only got two trophies, and this season they will get zeroooooooooooooooooooo trophy.

It could be our turn this season to get the lucks, win premiership, CL, Carling Cup and FA Cup.

What makes me so happy is this; no matter how many billions Chelsea spend on players, Chelsea will never play a football game better than Arsenal. As long as Arsene is the coach of course. Clichy, Van Persie, Ryan, Eboue, Bentley, Flamini, Cesc, Sanderos and so on, Arsenal future is so bright...By the time these players get to their prime, Chelsea will have to spend more billions because Drogba, that Senderos kept quiet, Frank, a good player that Cesc made him look like a poor player, and Makalele, a good player, would probably have retired. Arsenal will dominate the game this season and the season to come.

We may have only lost Vieira and Edu anon, but our lack of depth was already alarming last season. So now weve lost them and added Hleb. So therefore we have even less depth this year.

I had not forgotten about Cesc and Gilberto and yes i expect them to be first choice. My theory still applies though. Cesc is hardly the biggest or strongest and Gilberto is a holding midfielder. Again though my main worry is injuries. Neither will be able to play every game. So Flamini and more worryingly possibly Pires will have to play in central midfield. Last night, in my opinion, both showed that they are not up to it. Flamini, for me, is a good squad player, no more. Hes not got any characteristics that make him a world class player. Hes not physically imposing, hes not got blinding pace, hes not amazingly skillful, hes not a brilliant passer. He is decent, no more.

I am excited by Hleb, and also Bentley who both looked good. Bentley's a fine alternative on the right hand side if Freddie misfires.

Whats happening with Christanval and Song. Wengers not said anything, obviously he has packed their bags. That would disappoint me too, becuase Christanval MUST be better than Cygan.

I agree Owen is not a target man, but he would be a good signing. I think we should sign someone who can win headers and hold the ball up first, but if Owen is available for less than 10 mill he would be a good buy.

Until 3 signings come in, i cannot see us challenging Chelsea. There is NO WAY that we will play out sizzling football every single game. We didnt last season, we wont this season. When we struggle, we need other options, something a bit different in order to unlock teams who will accept a 0-0 draw off us. Baptista would have been the man, but who have you got now Arsene?

With Vieira gone and no obvious, full-season successor in place, I'm worried about Henry's health. He might, as our new captain, see it as his duty to get involved in more midfield tussles. In some matches it might even be paramount that he does. One reckless challenge from him, or from opposition scum, might sideline him for a long time.
As it is, our midfield does not look as defensively strong as it once was. And I'm sure that our young defence will have egg on their faces a few times this season. On the plus side, Vieira will not be there to lose possesion right in front of our D.
Who should we buy? I rate Seyi George Olofinjana, the Wolves Nigerian international. With Wengers tlc he would be a class act in no time.

i agree. Theres no real goalscoring alternative to TH14 either. There is now a massively huge burden on his shoulders. Bigger than ever. I fear a burn out mid season and that would be catastrophic for us. Wenger must make signings.

Gilio, I was the anonymous you responded to. True, all. But as I said, WHO can we sign? We can throw a lot of names out there, but most of them will be unavailable or out of our nebulous price range; the rest just really not that good. I'm laughing now, because I'm starting to sound a little like Moaninho, "Whoa is me. I only have 300m pounds to spend. Who can I buy?" The Owen rumor is picking up some steam. Just remember, in recent seasons, Wenger has made his signings near the death.

Today we have been linked with Seb Viear (keeper), Owen, Jenas again and a greek striker called Georgios Samaras who plays for Heerenveen.

Apparently Viera is very highly rated, but the song wouldnt work would it 'Viera, woo, Viera, woo, he plays for Arsenal, he comes from Uruguay...'. We will see on that one i guess.

Owen would be a good signing for us as he would take some pressure off our skipper who now has so much expectation on his shoulders he is bound to have a burn out mid season. I cannot see though how Owen would fit into our plans.

Jenas - I dont want Jenas.

Samaras I know very little about, apart from the fact he is 20 and plays in Holland. On Football Manager he has 20/20 for heading though... Could he be our target man type Plan B player to give us that extra something we dont currently have. He wouldnt be overly expensive, and we were linked with him earlier in the summer, maybe this time there will be some weight to the speculation?

I would like us to sign Viera in goal. If not him then maybe Antti Niemi Prem class, experienced and cheap) or Carlos Kameni who has rejected a contract extension at Espanyol.

I would like AW to sign Christanval for extra defensive cover other than Cygan the Arsenal defence destroyer.

Apparently Alex Song's signing is imminent, but the boy is only 17, not much can be expected of him. I would be very surprised if Chelsea forked out 32 Mill plus a player for Essien, so maybe when they have given up on him we should move for Diarra for around £10 million?

I would like to see us sign a target man, maybe Samaras might be the guy for the job. We have also been linked to Monaco's Adebayor. Both would cost around £5 mill. PLAN B, PLAN B, PLAN B ARSENE!

We have 30 mill to spend, im not saying spend all of it, but we need 3 players, lets get em in.
