He joined from Atletico Mineiro in July 2002, after playing in every minute of Brazil's victorious World Cup campaign.
A statement on Arsenal.com read:
"Arsenal is delighted to announce that Gilberto has signed a long term extension to his contract with the club until 2009. Everyone at Arsenal is looking forward to enjoying Gilberto's continued contribution in the forthcoming seasons."

finally some good news surrounding the club and this is indeed very good news. His experience is now even more valuable than before and he is a consistent, reliable performer, who seems to love the club. Terrific!
great news gilberto is under rated ave you seen on arsenal.com wenger reckons ryan smith could be the next youngster coming in,they say he got the pace of overmars` & the coolness of bergkamp,so he could be some player.
Enjoy it while you can...THFC will still finish above you.
We are not fair weather supporters like you bunch of faggots. You lose and dont show up.
I will support Spurs through Posh and Becks (thick and thin), unlike you lot who runs off and sulks after a defeat.
COYS
Serge..You are an embarrassment to me and fellow gooners. Fuck off and support another team.
GO ON YOU SPURS.
Where do you find a pretty woman at highbury?
The visitors end.
Sp*rs fans. As quoted in green street: 'Sh*t team, sh*t fans'
Wenger: Ryan Smith will be a success
Ryan Smith
Slaloming his way through the Highbury ranks, is a young Islington-born left-winger who is causing quite a stir with his performances for the Arsenal second-string — Eighteen-year-old Ryan Smith.
If you take former Gunner Marc Overmars’ pace and add the angelic grace and composure of Thierry Henry, throw in the vision and water-tight close-control of Dennis Bergkamp and mix in the nimble turning ability, dribbling and crossing of another ex-Gunner, Sylvinho - before letting it simmer and garnishing with a level head, what do we have?
The recipe to a potentially potent addition to Arsène Wenger’s arsenal. And it’s a point not lost on the Arsenal boss:
“He (Smith) has so many ingredients that you love to have when you’re a young player and I am confident he will be a big success,” Wenger told Arsenal.com last week.
“He’s creative, he’s quick, he can score goals, he’s left-footed as well, and he’s a great-crosser of the ball,” he said.
Smith, who joined Arsenal as a scholar in 2003, suffered a major set-back at the start of the 2004/05 season, sustaining a career-threatening cruciate ligament injury. But he battled back to star in the Carling Cup last season.
“He had a bad injury, Ryan, at a young age, but he’s now back to full fitness and he can be a very good support (player) for us,” said the Arsenal manager.
Smith himself, spoke to Arsenal.com in June of his ambitions for this year’s campaign.
“My main focus is to really, really push myself next season and try my best,” he said.
Another young gunner, defender Ryan Garry - who himself overcame a long-term injury - thinks his more attack-minded name-sake is destined for great things.
“He’s (Smith) a terrific player,” said Garry, speaking after the reserves’ 4-2 win over Ipswich earlier this month.
“Technically he is very good, he’s got a lot of pace and he’s very positive in the way he plays,”
“Sometimes I’m fortunate enough to be playing behind him and obviously I can see him doing his stuff, and you know it’s wonderful to watch when he’s in full flow,” he enthused.
For the younger players at Highbury, making the step up to a regular first-team berth is easier said than done - not least because of the world-class calibre of the players ahead of them. But Wenger had some encouraging words for his fledglings last week when he said:
“We must focus on the young players we have and give them a chance.”
If Smith gets his chance, and Wenger gets Ryan firing, Arsenal may have another real star-in-the-making.
Jack.. Why have you been on the Spurs blog talking about your cock and your body.
Fucking gay or what.
Shit performance...but we still support the club, unlike nyssie who goes missing everytime you lose a game.

Trust he is shit get Diop and also play eboue.
Thierry Henry could buy out final season of Arsenal contract for £3m.
A question for all gooners. All you ever say is look at the trophies we have won. You make yourselves sound like glory huntering supporters.
I support Tottenham because they are my local team, and are in my blood. I will support them through everything.
But, it seems that you only support Arsenal for the success.
NOT TRUE SUPPORTERS.
M8 all i got 2 say 2 u is
=============GRIMSBY=====================
Anon 5::....That does not answer the question you thick gooner cunt
EVERY fan will talk about the trophies their club has won (if the trophies have been significant and recent). It is a way of quantifying success. Perhaps Anon 5:14 you don't talk about it because Spurs have won very little of late? Every club will have glory hunter fans, local fans, die hard fans etc its just the way it is. Perhaps Arsenal have gained more supporters nationally and internationally because we play excellent, exciting and indeed successful football. I doubt Sp*rs have many glory hunting fans though!
Song is starting tonight for the reserves so a good chance for another look at him. He is clearly our third defensive minded CM and should be at least 'good enough'. Sounds like he's not, but I am willing to give him six months to improve. Maybe he's a slow starter, left his girlfriend behind, thinks he's playing for spurs -- any of these things could disrupt his early performances.
I'll think song will be just as good as his Uncle.........wether thats a good thing?????????
i am delighted he has signed a new contract we really missed him last season and he will help the younger players through tougher games
fuck me i've missed alot of abuse on these sites today! spurs fan, if you were on your blog regularly you'd know that i was having a bit of banter with some decent spurs fans after one claimed to have a 9 1/2 inch cock. sorry if you're so insecure as to thinkt hat may be gay.
Mr Serge remember i told u arsenal are a 1 man band, since henry been out besides campbells 2 goals wos happenin? middlesbrough? tuhn? thas wot u call a lucky end to a game, well good luck, coz i hate chelsea, more challengers 2 em the betta, coz it looks like those twats r gon run away with it despite their boring football
Jack that is not true. Football was being discussed and you came up with that shit. You can go on the blog and see i am right.
very gay.
legrand...glad tosee you agree that that you are glory hunters.
JACK...YOU DON'T HAVE A BIG COCK YOU ARE A BIG COCK.
GAY LOSER
Also on the spurs blogs Jack you were'nt very loyal to the gooners, were you?
Can some one who has inside info let me know how much Gil earns now after his current contract extension
come on then you loser. explain to evryone on here how i wasn't being "loyal" to arsenal? is it cos i said that it may not be the end of the world for the scum that they lost to the mighty grimsby or some other reason? i just think you're a little bit upset that evryone else on the sours blog quite likes me.
also at least i've got the bollocks to go on the spurs blogs as jack so people know who i am. who the fuck are you?
Why don't these Spuds go and post on their own blogs. It's not as if they haven't got anything to discuss:-
Grimsby, Shit Manager, Poor Signings, Lack of Success, Living life in the dark shadows created by the Emirates Stadium. Their 3rd best team in London status being threatened by the Hammers etc etc.
They might even be able to dig out some old black and white photos of the last time they won a North London derby.
