The Morning After

For some bizarre reason I'm not too distraught this morning - nothing like I was last night. I think the boys did us proud last night - ESPECIALLY as we were down to ten men after just 18 minutes. I'm not gonna sit here and slate the ref, cos we all know how fucking abysmal he was - and TH14 thought so too.

Here's what our skipper said...

"I don't know if the referee had a Barcelona shirt on because they kicked me all over the place. Some of his calls were strange. Maybe next time I'll learn how to dive. I expect the referee to do his job but I don't think he did. In fact, I'd like to have seen a proper referee out there."

"So many times Puyol should have got a yellow card and so many times Marquez came from behind to take my ankles. I have ended with bruises all over my body. I've also been told that their first goal [by Eto'o] was offside. They are already a good team, so if you help them, it is going to be very difficult to beat them."

Le Boss was equally fuming, here's what he thought...

"That goal is my biggest regret. To play 11 against 10 and be on top of that situation, but then to concede an offside goal is difficult to accept. I thought the whole story of changing the linesman because of the Barcelona shirt was not important. But, when we concede an offside goal, no one says anything."

On a more positive note, there may have been a tiny hint from Thierry that he's not gonna leave. On the way home after the game, he is reported as saying;

"WE must pick ourselves up and make sure WE come back stronger next year,"

Am I clutching at straws here, or does this bode well?

What do you reckon?

If those were his exact words (and it's all second hand) then I think he'l stay. He always chooses his words carefully, he knew what he was saying.

Henry has unfinished business at Arsenal.

He's a fighter, and will most definitely be staying until he's got his hands on this cup with Arsenal!

The ref was poor but AW and TH are embarrassing themselves by whinging, also they are setting themselves up for a slagging and much piss taking. We had chances enough, TH should have put at least one of his away, cometh the hour and all that. A brave effort with the ten men but just not enough. BTW I though Almunia could have stood up a bit and certainly kept his legs together. We will be back, TH or not.

Bad ref but that didnt cost us the game- It was a bad night for us gooners but we gave it our all- Henry & Cole will both stay- Trust me!

On another positive just look how much we have improved since our Jan- The signings look good & add to an already exciting young team- We will hopefully buy Torres & that will make us even stronger- Chelsea may have the cash but we are Arsenal- THE ARSENAL!

New stadium, New hopes- Lets change the Highbury Libary attitude & become the 12 man going in to the stadium- You who understand what im saying will understand what I mean- Those who dont well its pointless trying to explain.

all together now "and its arsenal, arsenal Fc, we're by far the greatest team the world has ever seen!"

COME ON THE GOONERS!!!!!!!!!

just got back from Paris... feeling hollow - i could be more accepting of defeat if we'd lost to a better team... Almunia played well considering he thought he would never see 1st team action again and i think his not being fully mentally prepared may have affected his kick outs - they were woeful - not too much else to complain about our stirling performance... just the missed chances - but that's football for you
the ref, of course, is another matter - it's a shame the norwegian paper didn't get a photo of him in his Barca shirt

i'm just grateful i'm not 10 years old any more and crying my eyes out

The ref had an all round poor game, but to be honest we cannot blame him. All in all he was equally poor in his judgement towards both sides. Yes he could have allowed Giuly's goal to stand and saved Jens, but Barca would have been a goal up and we may not have even made a game of it. You just don't know what would have happened.

Eboue dived too for the free kick and both Henry and Oleguer should not have been booked. The ref was dire.

Just watching that chance Henry missed in the second half makes me gasp with disappointment. I can only imagine how he feels. That must be in his head all the time. That was the trphy in our hands, BUT....

It just was not to be.

Hopefully this is not the end of this side, but it does smack slightly of it as there are doubts over the futures of 3 of our best players in Henry, Pires and Cole. If Henry and Cole stay we will be back, despite Chelsea being such a ridiculous entity buying whoevere, whenever and however they want.

At least we know now that we CAN compete in europe after all those years of failure. I'm not saying we will be back in the final next year, but I am relishing the prospect of giving it another go next season.

Give it a few days and this depressing episode will be over and we will be thinking of the world cup and potential signings.

Why did we lose the game? This seems funny, but the 4-5-1 system we have been playing, Sanderos has always been the determinant factor. Last year, we did it against Manchester in FA Cup and in the first leg of Premiership game this year.It is only an heavy defensive system that puts to much pression on Arsenal defense. And we paid the price, as with Barcelona quality, we should instead put Barcelona ball runners(Eto'o or Ronaldinhio) under pression to deny them the ball.
When I saw the team line up and there was no Flamini, nor sanderos, I knew that we were going to suffer, as the two lads are the most resiliant and lyon fighters that made our back four so successful. Eboue could without doubt lunch a conter-attack, so could Flamini from the left flanc, as Sanderos is always there to cover them as well as Toure.
But yesterday, the understanding between Cole and Sol wasn't the same as with Flamini and Sanderos.
We needed much quickers defenders in that position, as most of the time July was always on top of Ashley Cole and I thought Wenger could see that, but it wasn't to be.
I think Henry was Arsenal best player on the day although he was unlucky to not beat Barca keeper; beacause he mad all chances by himself as the result of his skill and pace. It's difficult to play a lone striker in a big final like this.
For me we lost beacause of the coach's tactical miscalculation. He wanted to fly "British" flag when winning was the only essue that counts.

lc,

Are you saying Ashley Cole isn't quick?

We only struggled because we were down to 10 men and playing a 441 formation. We weren't given the chance to play 451. Barca scored due to a tiredness of minds - our players were completely knackered and two lapses of concentration were the problem.

Wenger was put up against the wall. For us to even compete in the final was an achievement. We should be proud of our team and manager, not saying Arsene got it wrong.

Use your brain and take a second to think about how stupid your comments are. 451 got us to the final, which 442 has never done, and 442 only got us 4th place in the league.

Credit Arsene for changing it this year. Better to be in the final, in with a chance of winning the trophy, than out in the group stage or 2nd round!

We have lost the game because we were not able to score a second goal. Henry in normal form would have scored 3 goals out of his chances. Nevertheless I saw a great performance from Henry. He was fighting like a lion. So did the whole team. We can be very proud!!! So heads up GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!

Khunthold, use argument to desagree with me instead insulting me.
A 4-5-1 is a system that involves its specific players. I never said that Cole is not quick.I said that Cole and Sol's partnership was poor and as a consequence, it unsetled the whole system, as oppose to Sanderos and Flamini.
Just remember Sol poor display against Manchester City and Cole is still looking unsetled, as for me he still lacks some automatism(match fitness).
It is really poor from you that I was wrong for criticising the coach's tactics. He can only learn from criticism instead of glorifying his mistakes.
I hope you understand my point.

He couldn't have risked Senderos as he had not played in a month. Sol was the only sensible choice and to be honest Sol had as good a game as he's had in months, if not all year. Other than Lauren, we had our supposed 'first choice' back 4 in there and they did a fantastic job.

It was just not our night, and you are the only person that i have heard, in the world, criticise Wengers tactics. Are you a pundit, no? So what makes your opinion different or more important. I think you are wrong, you think you are right. Lets leave it at that.

Glad to see that Henry bottled it in the final, then decided to blame everyone else. Typical south London pikey scum.

I see no one on here has mentioned that the scum did not return the ball to the opposition after Barca had kicked it out when Henry was injured.
Cheating pikey scum.

Down to 10 men, beating one of the best teams in the world to a goal scored by an ex-spur, how the pikey scum must have been looking forward to gloating over the Spurs.

15 minutes from the end and the gooners choked. The cruelty of it made the result even better.
Thanks pikey scum for the laugh.
